Chris Calle (B. 1961) "Space Achievements Presentation Card #1" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Space Achievements Presentation Card. n June 3, 1965, astronaut Edward H. White II donned a specially designed spacesuit and left the safety of the Gemini 4 spacecraft high above the Earth to become the first American to walk in space. White maneuvered himself during his twenty-three minute walk with the aid of an experimental personal propulsion unit, connected to the capsule by twenty-five feet of tether and gold-plated "umbilical cord." When the two astronauts splashed down at the end of their mission, they had achieved, in addition to White's historic space walk, a 1.7 million mile, sixty six orbit flight.
