Verger Frères | A pair of sapphire flower earclips, circa 1960 Each petal of ropetwist design, centrally featuring a cluster of circular-cut sapphires, clip fittings, maker's marks VF, French assay marks, one sapphire deficient, length 2.5cm Footnote: Ferdinand Verger founded Verger Freres in Paris, in 1872. Originally specializing in women’s watches before beginning to also craft jewels. The Verger Freres maker’s mark was officially registered in 1896 as F.V, reflecting his name, before being changed to V.F in 1911, most likely as his two sons had now joined the business. Verger’s two sons, Georges and Henri, developed and grew the business throughout the twentieth century. By 1921, when Ferdinand Verger officially signed the business to them, they had already amassed over two hundred craftsmen. The Maison chose to employ these artists directly, allowing them to maintain the quality of work they had become known for. During the 1930s and 40s, Verger Freres created pieces for many top jewelry firms such as Cartier, Tiffany & Co., Bulgari, Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron and many more. As many Verger Freres pieces were sold to other jewelry companies, many pieces go unrecognized today.
