M1860 Field and Staff Officer's Sword no maker or distributor marks visible, 1860s or later, the 31.75 in. straight blade etched with patriotic motifs, floral designs, and the name of owner, "James W. Post"; gilt brass guard and pommel, grip with ray skin wrap bound by brass wire; iron scabbard with iron mounts. LOA 39.25 in. A James W. Post shows up in Union army records as a corporal serving three years in the 13th New Jersey Infantry. Perhaps he saw some postwar service as an officer and this sword was his, or perhaps it belonged to another James W. Post altogether. Research will tell.
