Johann Hermann Carmiencke (American/Denmark, 1810-1867), Hudson River Landscape oil on canvas (lined), signed and inscribed "NY 1854" at lower center, presented in an antique gilt composition frame. Born in Denmark, Johann Carmiencke studied alongside Casper David Frederick and also served for a time as court painter to King Christian VIII of Denmark. He emigrated to the United States in 1851 and settled in Brooklyn. While in New York, Carmiencke taught and was a member of the National Academy of Design. Considered a member of the Hudson River School, his paintings tend towards a darker palette and a more romantic air than his contemporaries. Examples of his New York landscapes are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Brooklyn Museum in New York, The High Museum in Atlanta, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.
