100-300 AD. Roman, A gold pendant with a rounded suspension loop, truncated drop-shaped body with petalled border and milky white cameo stone in high relief. The cameo depicts the God Mercury with flowing hair, heavily lidded almond-shaped eyes, prominent nose, full lips and rounded chin; he can be identified by the characteristic tips of the wings of his petasos (wide brimmed hat) just visible at the top of the cameo. In Roman religion, Mercury is the god of shopkeepers and merchants, travellers, thieves and tricksters. He is commonly identified with the Greek Hermes, the fleet-footed messenger of the gods. Excellent condition; wearable. Size: L:45mm / W:37mm ; 21.2g; Provenance: Private London collection, formed in the 1980-90s on the UK and European art market.
