Believed to be purchased from OLIVOTTI BRO'S, 1191 Broadway, New York, N Y. and/or, of 145 Tremont ST. Boston, MA. During 1916-1924. MASSIVE, EXTRAORDINARY, 15/16th C. Chinese Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) Gilt Bronze Buddha Deity Figure of Immortal Heavenly Guardian, Virupaksha, Guardian of the Western Direction and King of the Nagas. With one face and large round eyes, moustache and beard, the right hand holds at the waist a writhing snake entwined around the upper arm. With the left hand upraised, he holds a stupa. Adorned with an ornate crown of gold, jewels and a small ribbon at each side, the figure is richly adorned with Turquoise beads inlaid. Standing straight in awareness posture and wearing boots. All sets upon a prominent solid acrylic pedestal base. The reverse side of Buddha shows a rectangular cut-out, a precisely fitting bronze comes with the sculpture.
