19th century AD. A wrought iron ‘trumbash’ or sickle knife of the Mangbetu people having a double-edged sickle-shaped blade with flat spine rib and three ornamental circular perforations, the tang widening into the wood hilt which terminates in a large cylindrical and integral wooden pommel; the hilt partly wrapped in twisted iron wire where it meets the tang. 470 grams total, 36cm (14 1/4"). Property of a Brussels gallery; acquired on the European art market. These knives are ceremonial and prestige weapons for the men of the Mangbetu; they exist in different styles and materials but always with the characteristic double-edged, sickle-shaped curved iron blade with medial ridge.
