Description
Translation provided by Youdao
15th century AD. A silver candlestick base fragment with Hebrew lettering Dalet (?) and Hey (?) on one side, and Hey (?) with Shin (?) on the back. See Landsberger, F., ‘The origin of the ritual implements for the Sabbath’ in Hebrew Union College Annual, Vol. 27, 1956, pp.387-415.11.6 grams, 44mm (1 3/4"). Property of a West Essex gentleman; formerly in a 1980s private collection. One of the most iconic and definitive pieces of Judaica were the candlesticks, used for the Sabbath. No Jewish home was complete without at least one pair of Sabbath candlesticks. For centuries, Jewish artisans all over the world have been inventing new styles of candlesticks and new materials to use to help families bring the joyous light of the Sabbath into their homes. The calligraphic style on this fragment is indicative of 15th century AD Spanish artwork. [No Reserve]
