Description
Translation provided by Youdao
3rd-4th century AD. A polygonal gold ring with ten-sided facetted gold hoop, inscribed with Greek letters 'POIPIOYP' (read RIRIOUR), or the Latin inscription 'PORPIROUR' (of Porfirios?) one letter on each convex sectoral plane. See Henkel, F., Die Römischen Fingerringe der Rheinlande und der benachbarten Gebiete by Archäologie, Berlin, 1913, fig.220 and nn.10-15.3.77 grams, 17.55mm overall, 16.04mm internal diameter (approximate size British H, USA 3 3/4, Europe 6.18, Japan 6) (3/4"). Property of an English collector; acquired in the Netherlands before 2000. It is possibly a foreign name translated into Greek (genitive case"). A similar ring, also with a Greek inscription, was found in Vinkovci in Croatia. This type of ring, which rose to popularity during the age of Septimius Severus, often had Opus Interrasile bezels.
