常有言之，石不能言最可人，此砚即如是。端石质佳，作正方形，四角圆折，婉转流畅，窄边起缘，向内浅挖而为砚心，其上琢浮雕祥瑞灵芝为饰，简洁素雅。灵芝一侧，作正中下凹之井字形，以为墨池。砚边宽厚，并刻隶书、楷书款题于两侧，其文琢磨有度，深浅均衡，字形端庄。铭者翁嵩年（1647～1728）字康饴，号萝轩，钱塘（今杭州）人。康熙二十七年进士，仕为广东提学。以枯笔作林峦峯岫，气质古雅疏拙，画家习气，毫发不能犯其笔端。曾得青玉版十三行，旋进之内府。卒年八十二。着《天香书屋稿》、《白云山房集》、《友石居集》。带红木盒。
