John Frederick Lewis RA, British 1805-1876- Trinitarian Monk, c.1835; watercolour, bears pencil inscription on the mount, 33x23cm Note: according to a later inscription on the mount, this work was ‘Exhibited 1835 (S.P.W.C) mentioned in Walker's Quarterly No.28 (1929) p.52 incorrectly referred to as “S. Tumberia” instead of “Trinitarian”’. The title of the work exhibited at the Society of Painters in Water Colours, 1835 (no.262) was ‘A Friar of the Order of Los Trinitarios Descalzos, Spain’. It had been bought by Captain Harcourt of St Leonards, near Windsor, for 18 gns. With thanks to Briony Llewellyn and Charles Newton for their assistance in the cataloguing of this lot.
