A North Italian polychrome decorated and parcel-gilt casket, 19th century, the front decorated with Amphitrite, the ends with coats-of-arms within pounced and raised gesso frames, on bracket feet, 57cm high, 61cm wide, 31cm deep Note: the coat-of-arms featuring five crescents is for the Piccolomini family, prominent in Siena from the beginning of the 13th century until the 18th century and which included two popes - Pius II (1405-1464) and his nephew Pius III (1439-1503). Structurally stable but with various knocks, scuffs and abrasions overall. The decoration has been refreshed in areas, mainly to the leading edges to cover up old losses. The tail of dolphin on the right of front panel appears to have been later refreshed as do the wings of the cherub next to this dolphin and the mouth of the central female figure. Chips to the painted gesso decoration. Areas of raised gesso decoration to the side panels. The left side foot with a crack to the gesso at the join to the body of the casket. The hinges replaced and a spliced in fillet of timber to the top of the back panel where the hinges join - approximately 1 inch in depth. Evidence of old, apparently inactive woodworm throughout. The back is not decorated. The interior with 19th-century marbled paper lining, worn, torn and lacking in places. One key.
