Provenance: The Dawson Gallery, Dublin (Stock no. 4805) James Adam & Sons, lot 63 This work by Maurice MacGonigal shows the vast landscape leading towards the vibrant village of Letterfrack in the Connemara area of County Galway. Letterfrack can be found at the head of Ballynakill Bay and is overlooked by Diamond Mountain. MacGonigal was born in Dublin in 1900. He was apprenticed to his uncle's stained glass workshop before studying at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. In 1927, MacGonigal moved to Holland where he studied Fine Art at the Hague. On his return to Dublin, he took up a teaching position at the Royal Hiberian Academy and also at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. His close association with the RHA continued and in 1933 he was elected an academician. MacGonigal exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy of Arts, London and the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh throughout his career. From 1962-1977 MacGonigal acted as President of the National Gallery of Ireland. His work is included in many private and public collections including the Ulster Museum, North Down Museum and the Royal College of Physicians, London.
