As a bonesetter or manipulative surgeon he was at odds with the medical profession at the turn of the century because he practised healing without having received the traditional education of a teaching hospital. His patients included Shaw, Kipling and Augustus John. In 1920, 307 MP's signed a petition asking the Archbishop of Canterbury to bestow on Barker an honorary medical degree. This failed, but two years later he received a knighthood. Medical hostility gradually petered out. In 1936 he gave a demonstration of his skills before the British Orthopaedic Association, and three years later a film of his work was made. On 8 September, 1967 The Times reported that Michael Joseph's book Harley Street, revealed that prominent surgeons were sending their patients to Barker despite the B.M.A. ban on him. The present miniature is painted on a photographic base. Mildred Lingwood may have been married to Edgar Lingwood who ran a photographic studio.
