ARISTIDE PETRILLI (ITALIAN, 1868-1930): A LARGE ALABASTER GROUP OF PUTTI ON A SERPENTINE COLUMN, the five Bacchic putti pulling a chariot modelled as a relief carved urn, the urn jardiniere carved in relief with masks amongst foliage, on a large wheel carved with a Greek key border and trailing vines, the chariot / cart festooned with flowers and fruit, the cherubs holding floral garlands, on an oval naturalistic base signed 'P. Petrilli 1894 Firenze', on a Sienna marble base, with a plaque to the front inscribed 'R.I.O. DALLA VENDEMMIA GALL. PROF A. PETRILO (PETRICO) FIRENZE, mounted on a green serpentine marble pedestal, with oval top over fluted column terminating in a circular base over an octagonal foot, the alabaster group 69cm wide x 43cm high, the column 108cm high, 151cm high overall Property from an English Private Collection. Astride Petrilli worked with Raffaello Romanelli before establishing his own studio at via Serragli, 152, in Florence. He specialised in romanticized figures of classical and historical themes, often using coloured marbles or bronze or gilt highlights. His exhibited at the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français in 1896 (n° 3744 "Deux haut-reliefs" and n° 3745 "L'Empereur Napoléon Bonaparte") and exhibited a bust of Joan of Arc at the Paris Exposition Universelle 1900, and Wrestling Bacchantes at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition (St. Louis World's Fair).
