A GEORGE III MAHOGANY LONGCASE CLOCK BY HIGGS & EVANS, ROYAL EXCHANGE, LONDON, CIRCA 1780, the hood with break-arch moulding and free standing, brass capped and fluted columns, over a concave neck moulding and trunk with break-arch door over a panelled, plinth base, the brass dial with gilt Rococo style pierced spandrels, silvered Roman chapter ring and Arabic five minute markers and gilt matted centre, with subsidiary silvered regulation dial and silvered name plate inscribed 'HIGGS & EVANS Royal Exchange LONDON', with chamfered date aperture below, the arch with subsidiary silvered dial for strike / silent, the weight driven movement with anchor escapement striking on a bell, with pendulum and two weights, 220cm high Property from an English Private Collection. Purchased from 'The Clock Shop', Weybridge, Surrey, 11 July 1998. Higgs and Evans were highly respected makers of longcase, table clocks and watches. Established in 1775 they were first based at Sweetings Alley before moving to Royal Exchange, where the business continued until 1825. Examples of their work are included in Science Museum and the Guildhall museum.
