A pair of large Continental sculpted white marble urns, late 19th century, each with a broad rim above a figural scene of cavorting amorini in low relief, above twin handles, a waisted socle and square base, 120cm high Bidders from the UK and outside of the European Union should be aware that additional import charges may apply The design of these urns bears loose comparison with the Borghese Vase, and whilst that famed antiquity is one of many known Roman examples of Campana form, where an everted rim overhangs a figural frieze with mask form handles projecting from a waisted underside, -since it was not unusual in the 19th century for sculptors to reinterpret the decorative details for their own purposes, and given the prevailing fame of the Borghese example in the late 19th century, it would not be unreasonable to suggest that it served as the inspiration for the urns offered in this lot
