A sculpted limestone model of a male torso, after the Gaddi Torso, 20th century, after the antique, portrayed with pronounced musculature overall, 120cm high, supported on a metal rod above a tapering rectangular section pedestal 84cm high, 48cm wide, 210cm high overall Bidders from the UK and outside of the European Union should be aware that additional import charges may apply The torso presented here is derived from a circa 2nd century BC Hellenistic, probably Pergamene, prototype, now in the collection of the Uffizi Gallery, Florence. Little is known about its provenance prior to its 1778 purchase by Peter Leopold, Grand Duke of Tuscany, from the Gaddi collection, though Gloria Fossi notes in her book Uffizi (Giunti, 2004, p. 46) that the torso was documented in the Gaddi inventory as early as 1520. Its frequent appearance in drawings and paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries attests to its early popularity with artists and admirers. The sculpture is thought to have once represented a centaur with his hands tied behind his back. Condition Report: This weighs approximately 850kg overall including the base Some marks, knock, scratches, abrasions. The torso and base have a relatively clean look to the surface, reflecting the objects relative lack of age, although some discolouration through weathering is starting to occur. The truncations at the neck, hips, and limbs are rough-hewn by design, the torso is supported is supported above the base by way of a metal rod - this is currently loose in its socket to allow for disassembly and will require some composition or cement to fix this in place and repair the losses around the lip of this socket when this is installed in its final destination.
