Attributed to the Kiryu Kosho Gaisha (Pioneering Craft and Commerce Company), Meiji era (1868-1912), 1880-1890s Of rounded rectangular form, supported on an integral four-legged rectangular base, the bombé sides rising to a crisp shoulder, which is fitted with two tall slender, upswept bracket handles chiselled in low relief with foliage, the dark-brown bronze body encrusted in predominantly gold, silver, bronze and shakudo, on the front with a dove perched on a flowering magnolia tree, the magnolia branches extending to its corresponding side with a skylark flying beneath, on the back with another dove in flight beneath yamazakura (mountain cherry), the cherry branches continuing to its corresponding side overhanging a pair of tumbling sparrows, the neck and band above the foot similarly encrusted with butterflies of different sizes and species, the foot with four sprays of chrysanthemums, the cover also decorated with four sprays of chrysanthemums echoing the designs around the foot and surmounted by a hawk finial; unsigned. 48.5cm x 28.5cm x 69cm (19 1/8in x 11¼in x 27 3/16in).
