A GEORGE III HAREWOOD AND MARQUETRY SECRETAIRE A ABATTANT LATE 18TH CENTURY With moulded variegated marble top, the fall opening to a shelved interior and a mirror panel cupboard door flanked by short drawers, above a baize inset writing surface 149cm high, 104cm wide, 56cm deep Whilst the timbers and metalwork used in this cabinet are typical of that of used in late 18th century English furniture, the design and execution of the marquetry suggest that it could possibly have be made by a French hand working in Great Britain. The French Revolution, from 1789, caused mass movement and emigration of citizens from France to neighbouring countries, including Great Britain, and this might explain the strong French appearance of marquetry on what is otherwise an English constructed secretaire.
