A set of twelve late George II silver shaped circular dinner plates by Edward Wakelin, London 1754, with raised gadrooned rims, engraved with a coat-of-arms, numbered from a larger set, scratch weights, 25cm (9 3/4in) diameter, 6342g (203.9 oz) Provenance: Property of a Gentleman. The arms are those of Stephen FOX (1704-1776) who in 1741 was created Baron Ilchester and Stavordale of Redlynch Park, Somerset. Later in 1756 he was created Earl Ilchester and in 1758 assumed the name Stephen STRANGWAYS-FOX on inheriting the STRANGWAYS estate in accordance with the inheritance of his wife, Elizabeth Horner STRANGWAYS the eventual heir of her brother Thomas STRANGWAYS (died 1726), who at her arranged marriage in 1731 was aged thirteen years. After 1758 the arms of STRANGWAYS were quartered with FOX and the descendancy and earldom continues today.
