Fritz Mackensen (German, 1866-1953) An extensive rolling landscape signed and dated 'Fritz Mackensen/1910' (lower right) oil on canvas 59.1 x 88.6cm (23 1/4 x 34 7/8in). Footnotes: Provenance Commissioned by the current owner's grandparents, Julius and Alice Rothschild for their home in Hannover, Germany. The house at 5 Eichendorff Strasse, Hannover, was the height of Art Nouveau sophistication containing commissioned portraits and this expansive Worpswede landscape by Fritz Mackensen. The painting was passed through the family, surviving storage in a German barn during the Second World War and ending up at the family's Yorkshire home in the 1960s. Fritz Mackensen founded the Worpswede Colony of Artists in the late 1890s. The artists promoted a simpler artisan life leaving behind the rapid industrialisation of German cities. This extensive rolling landscape with a broad horizon line is likely to be a view from the village of Worpswede.
