Emvin Cremona (Maltese, 1919-1987) Urban landscape under a turbulent sky signed and dated 'Cremona 74' (lower left) mixed media 63.5 x 50.5cm (25 x 19 7/8in). Footnotes: Emvin Cremona was born in Malta in 1919, and after travelling abroad to Rome, London, and Paris for his studies, he returned to Malta in 1948. Whilst Cremona is best known for designing the interiors of numerous churches in Malta, he is also a celebrated artist of both landscape and abstract painting, as well as designing most of the Maltese postal stamps from 1957 until the early 1980s. Cremona's artwork can be found not only in Malta but internationally, with works on show at the United Nations headquarters in New York and in the World Health Organisation in Geneva. Regarded as one of Malta's best 20th-century artists, it is no surprise that he represented his country in their first Venice Biennale in 1958.
