Provenance: - Valldecrist Charterhouse. Altura (Segorbe) - Pinazo Collection. Godella (Valencia) Exhibitions and bibliography: - Gómez Frechina, J., "Francisco de Osona. Altarpiece of San Benito, San Bruno and San Bernardo" in La memoria recobrada. Pintura valenciana recuperada de los siglos XIV-XVI, exhibition catalog, Museo de Bellas Artes de Valencia, 2005, no. 44. Francisco de Osona is one of the main representatives of Renaissance painting in Valencia, whose style shows the influence of a series of painters established in this city, such as the Flemish Alincbrot, Bartolomé Bermejo or the Italians Francesco Pagano and Paolo de San Leocadio. This important panel was part of an altarpiece dedicated to San Bruno that was in the Valldecrist Carthusian monastery. With the disentailment, the altarpiece was dismantled and its panels eventually became part of public and private collections such as the Museum of Fine Arts of Castellón, the Cathedral Museum of Segorbe, the Masaveu Collection or the collection of the painter Ignacio Pinazo, from which comes the work shown here and which represents Saint Benedict. Saint Benedict, on a profusely decorated golden background, is depicted full-length wearing the black habit of the Benedictine order and carrying his most frequent iconographic attributes: the crosier, for being the abbot of Montecasino, and the book of the Rule that he wrote for his monks and that served as a source of inspiration for other religious communities. . Oil on board.. 181 x 72,5 cm.
