Roy Andersen (1930-2019) Voice of the Deep Quiet signed 'Roy Andersen CA' (lower right), signed again with conjoined initials 'RA' (lower left) oil on canvas 69 x 46in framed 80 x 57in Footnotes: Provenance Claggett/Rey Gallery, Edwards, Colorado. Private collection, Vail, Colorado, from the above. Western artist, muralist and illustrator Roy Andersen grew up on a farm in New Hampshire and studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art and Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles. He worked as a successful illustrator in Chicago and New York for periodicals including National Geographic, Sports Illustrated and Time Magazine, and received important mural commissions including for the National Parks Service. Andersen moved West to focus on painting in the 1980s, first to Sedona before finally settling outside of Kerrville, Texas. He became a member of the Cowboy Artists of America in 1989. Voice of the Deep Quiet and Badge of Honor (lot 230) are each strong examples of the artist's passion for Native American subject matter, and his ability to impart emotion and meaning in his scenes through gesture, authentic detail, color and atmosphere. He said, 'Indians believe life moves in circles. I return to a love of horses and the native people who lived their lives on horse back. I paint Indians not just because they are picturesque, but because they are living symbols, that express the thoughts of free men and animals moving through a natural world. They are real, serious, and honest people looking for a connection between God and their own nature and the beautiful landscape around them.' 1 1Cowboy Artists of America, Exhibition Catalogue, 2002.
