East Asia, Japan, Meiji period, ca. early 20th century CE. A wooden box for holding a lantern or candles constructed from wooden slats and bars. One side features a barred door that swings out and upward. The lower panels around three sides have a cut out mountain motif- likely the famous Mt. Fuji. With some safe electric candles, this could easily make a decorative floor lantern!
