19TH CENTURY;The figure of Manjushri is shown holding a ruyi scepter and seated on a Buddhist lion. Is shown seated on a double-lotus base set upon a large lotus leaf draped over the back of their animal vehicle. figure is similarly rendered wearing layered robes and flowing celestial scarves, and the hair is dressed in knotted plaits trailing down on either side of the shoulders and pulled back behind a diadem centered by a flaming pearl.Manjushri (Wenshu), the bodhisattva of Wisdom, is usually shown seated on a lion and is often depicted in a triad with the Buddha Shakyamuni and the bodhisattva Samantabhadra (Puxian), who is shown seated on an elephant.Compare the pair of similarly modeled Dehua figures of Samantabhadra and Manjushri, bearing the seal of Xu Yunlin (1887-1940), sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 8 April 2013, lot 3196. See, also, the similar Dehua figure of Samantabhadra seated on an elephant, sold at Sotheby's New York, 20 March 2007, lot 774.
