AN ITALIAN MODEL OF SCIPIO'S TOMB IN ROSSO ANTICO MARBLE MID 19TH CENTURY 15cm high, 27cm wide Provenance: The Simon Neal Collection Carved from Rosso Antico marble, the present work is a model of the famous Roman tomb belonging to Lucius Cornelius Scipio Barbatus. The inscription carved into the tomb reads: 'L.CORNELOS.CN.F.SCIPIO CORNELIVS. LVCIVS. SCIPIO. BARBATVS. GNAIVOD. PATRE PROGNATVS. FORTIS. VIR. SAPIENSQVE QVOIVS.FORMA.VRTVTEI.PARISVMA FVIT - CONSOL CENSOR. AIDILIS. QVEI. FVIT. APVD. VOS - TAVRASIA. CISAVNA SAMNIO. CEPIT - SVBIGIT. OMNE. LOVCANA. OPSIDESQVE.ABDOVCIT'. This translates as: 'Lucius Cornelius Barbatus, the son of Gnaeus, a courageous and wise man, whose beauty was a great as his manliness, was consul, censor and aedile in your country. He conquered Taurasia and Cisauna, in the Samnium, and subjugated the whole of Lucania, bringing back hostages'.
