A FINE GILT BRONZE MINIATURE VASE, HAN DYNASTY China, 202 BC to 220 AD. The compressed globular body rising from a curved and spreading foot to a waisted neck with flaring mouth, the body finely incised with a continuous scene of various wild animals amid craggy rockwork and scroll, framed by two scroll bands, the foot with a scroll band as well. Provenance: J. J. Lally & Co., New York (old label with inventory number '3281' to base). From a noted private collection in New York City, USA, acquired from the above. Thence by descent within the same family. Condition: Overall very good condition, commensurate with age, absolutely original. Areas of gilt have been affected by corrosion, particularly around the neck, but most of the incised decoration is still very well visible, see the many detailed images available at www.zacke.at. Malachite encrustations to the interior and exterior. Old wear, traces of use and weathering, soiling, minor dents and nicks here and there. A lion is chasing another animal (fig. 2), and a tiger and dog appear to be in a scuffle (fig. 3).
