Artist: Philip Guston (Canadian-American, 1913 - 1980). Title: "Untitled #3". Medium: Ink and pencil drawing on paper. Date: Composed 1968. Dimensions: Overall size: 11 3/4 x 8 1/4 in. (298 x 210 mm). Lot Note(s): Signed and dated, lower right. White wove textured paper. Very good condition; a few soft creases upper right and upper left corners, not into the image, else fine. Comment(s): Guston was a painter and printmaker in the New York School, which included many of the abstract expressionists, such as Jackson Pollock and Willem De Kooning. In the late 1960s Guston helped to lead a transition from abstract expressionism to neo-expressionism in painting, abandoning the so-called "pure abstraction" of abstract expressionism in favor of more cartoonish renderings of various personal symbols and objects.
