AN ENAMELLED 'TEN VIEWS OF JIANGXI PROVINCE' BOWL Iron-red Jiaqing seal mark and of the period The scene inscribed Baihua chun xiao [Spring Dawn at Hundred Flowers], showing Baihua Island in East Lake in Nanchang, depicting figures in a riverside garden with a ceremonial arch, before a walled compound amongst willow trees identified as Donghu Shuyuan [East Lake College], further buildings beyond connected by bridges, the interior in iron-red with a central roundel of pine, finger citron and blossoming prunus, within a ruyi-motif border. 14.5cm (5 1/4in) diam. 注脚 Provenance: by repute, gifted to the present owner by Ivy Suckling, daughter of Sir Claude MacDonald, who acquired it in China circa 1900, and thence by descent. This bowl belongs to a set depicting famous scenic spots of the region around Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province. Geng Baochang mentions as characteristic of the Jiaqing reign finely potted and painted porcelains decorated with ten famous views of various areas, such as Ten Views of West Lake, in Hangzhou, Ten Views of Changjiang, the Yangzi River, Ten Views of Lushan, a mountain in Jiangxi, and Ten Views of Dongting, a lake in Hunan; see Geng Baochang, Ming Qing ciqi jianding [Appraisal of Ming and Qing porcelain], Hong Kong, 1993, p. 293.
