A RARE LONGQUAN CELADON-GLAZED BARBED-RIM 'LOQUATS' DISH Late 14th/early 15th century The sturdily potted vessel carved to the well with a fruiting loquat tree, the lobed cavetto divided into panels enclosing leafy flowering stems of peonies, chrysanthemums and lotus below the everted barbed rim, the exterior carved with double panels of flowering stems, below a floral and foliate band to the rim underside, the vessel evenly covered in an unctuous glaze, the base with a burnt orange firing ring. 47cm (18 1/2in) diam. 注脚 The Property of a Gentleman Provenance: The property of a European family, acquired circa 1900 and thence by descent. The present dish, although made in Longquan, closely follows in form and decoration blue and white porcelain produced in Jingdezhen at the same time. See for example J.A. Pope, Chinese Porcelains from the Ardebil Shrine, London, 1981, pl.43; and see also Gugong bowuyuan: Ming chu qinghua ci, Beijing, 2002, pl.40. For a similar group of barbed rim dishes, circa 1400, see Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum: Yuan and Ming Dynasty Celadon Wares, Regina Krahl, Sotheby's Publications, 1986, pp.300-301, nos. 233-239. Also from this group see an example of a dish with fruiting lychee, dated early 15th century, p.303, no. 24, from the same publication. For another example of a rare Longquan 'loquats' dish, see Christie's Hong Kong, 30 November 2011, lot 3011.
