An unusual late 19th / early 20th century Burmese unmarked silver offering bowl, Lower Burma or Mandalay circa 1900 Rounded bowl form upon a domed spreading foot, the pull off lid of multi-section form with compressed knops and serrated collars with an internal stem culminating in a pyramidal finial. The central section with embossed decoration of figural scenes against a textured ground below embossed arches with foliate scrolls all above a band of betel leaves. The foot with a band of trailing foliate scrolls between textured bands. The pull off lid with a chased brand of trailing scrolls inhabited with animals such as stags, lions, chinthe and a nāga, with leafy bands above. The central knop with embossed decoration of four Himaphan faces. Gilt interior. Height – 22.5 cm / 8.9 inches Weight – 335 grams / 10.77 ozt This unusual piece, which bears resemblance to the Mandalay offering vessels Hsun Ok, although much smaller in size is also distinguished using textured background or “wallpaper” also associated with the Mandalay region. The use of the trailing fleshy scrolls interspersed with animals and the Himaphan masks on the lid are distinctly Thai features and suggest that this could have been produced in the lower Burma/Siam border.
