Description

A fine George III sterling silver twin handled tray, London 1807 by John Mewburn (reg. 2nd Oct 1792) Of rectangular form with rounded corners with a cavetto edge and an ovolo rim, the applied twin acanthus scroll handles with ovolo section. The field engraved to the centre with a coat of arm of six quarters with another coat of arms on an escutcheon of pretence, all above the motto Non Nobis Tantum Nati. The arms surmounted by twin crests of a stag’s head erased with an oak leaf in the mount, and a squirrel sejant cracking a nut. The field otherwise with engraved decoration of honeysuckle and floral forms with a scrolling band with leady tendrils. Fully marked to the reverse. Length – 81.2 cm / 32 inches Weight – 5250 grams / 16.79 ozt The arms are for Lee-Warner with Brydges on an escutcheon of pretence Lee quartering Warner of Kent (granted 1616) quartering Kingsley/Wetenhale/Whitney, quartering Howe quartering Woodward quartering Wekys For Rev. Daniel Henry Woodward (1775-1858) of Walsingham Abbey who married Anne Brydges (c.1788) in 1808, she the daughter and coheir of Francis William Thomas Brydges (1751-1793) of Tyberton Court, Sheriff of Herefordshire and his wife Anne Phillips (1757-1829) who were married on the 29th July 1785. Her sister Catherine (1791-1865) married Reginald Wynniatt (c.1786-1860) of Guilting Grange in 1812. There was a petition in the House of Lords to assume the surname and arms of Henry Lee Warner in March 1805 to the above’s father; Daniel Henry Woodward (1752-1835), the son of Daniel Woodward, Esq., (c.1699-1755) and Mary Huntley (1722-1797). Mary the daughter of Rev. Richard Huntley (1693-1728) and Anne Lee Warner (c.1684-1761), sister of Henry Lee-Warner (1688-1760), whose son Henry Lee Warner (1722-1804). Henry a direct descendant of John Lee Warner Bishop of Rochester (1631–1679), whose son Henry Lee-Warner Colonel MP (1656-1734) married Dorothy Howe (d.1727) on the 16th Oct 1679, one of the arms represented in the quartering George Huntly (1619-1670) married Sylvestra Wekys (1629-1675), the grandparents of Rev. Richard Huntley (1693-1728), one of the arms represented in the quartering A twin handled tray of 1812 by Crispin Fuller engraved with the Lee Warner coat of arms of four quarters sold Christie’s 12 Sep 2012, lot 159 (£6000 incl. premium), the arms possibly for his sister Ann Woodward (1778-1819). John Mewburn was apprenticed to John Crouch 5th Feb 1777. Working from Hare Court, Aldersgate Street, then at Abingdon Row, Goswell Road. He was a specialist maker of salvers and trays.
