A SECTION OF PRESENTATION KAZARIZAME (MOUNTED RAYSKIN) Edo period (1615-1868), 18th/19th century A large section of high-quality rayskin with large protruding nodules mounted on a wood stretcher and decorated with cotton cloth and orange lacing in the manner of a koto, with cyclical date on the reverse Kinoto tori, possibly corresponding to 1789 24 3/4in (63cm) long 注脚 Same (rayskin or shagreen) was highly esteemed in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Japan. In addition to their familiar use as a practical and decorative covering for sword handles, fine pieces of same were sometimes specially mounted for display as kazarizame or kazari arazame.
