German crucifix of the XVII-XVIII centuries.Silver and cut crystal. With punches from Nuremberg.Measurements: 18 x 13 cm (cross); 31 x 25 cm (frame).German Baroque crucifix entirely made of chiseled silver, decorated with cut crystal cabochons and with the figure of the dead Christ in its center. The arms of the cross have medallions with the representation of the four evangelists in bas-relief. Regarding the image of Christ, it should be noted how it will be one of the main themes of the baroque period, and through the centuries it will evolve, introducing from the beginning a powerful pathos. The image represents Christ, with a suffering anatomy, his head resting on one of his shoulders. We already see an anatomy that, although classical, is evidently suffering; a thin torso, with the ribs and sternum clearly marked, the veins of the arms swollen, etc. These are meticulously carved features, with great detail, revealing the naturalistic zeal that will be characteristic of Counter-Reformation art. Likewise, while the purity cloth remains small, the folds are still quite flat compared to the wide folds of the full Baroque.
