A very large George II silver brandy saucepan by George Wickes, London, 1729 Baluster wood handle with heart-shaped junction, baluster body engraved with crest of a martlet supporting an anchor below a baron’s coronet, 12cm diameter, 17.5cm high, width to end of spout 14.6cm, 24oz (744 gm) This is Wickes’s early mark (Grimwade no. 918), later he went on to be a royal silversmith, making for Frederick, Prince of Wales and much of the nobility and leading families of England. His later work post 1735 is considered by many to be on a par with that of Paul de Lamerie, see Grimwade’s note on page 701 of London Goldsmiths 1697-1837
