A pair of George III silver candlesticks of neo-classical form, maker’s mark of John Sidaway, London, 1781 Tapering columns with applied vertical bead bands, acanthus leaves at tops and bottoms of columns, on square bases with bead and acanthus leaf borders, the fluted capitals beaded to match columns and with bead-edged detachable nozzles and bands of trailing laurel at base of pedestal above foot, engraved with crest of lion’s head erased pierced through the neck with a spear, filled bases covered with green baize, 31.1cm high. (2) John Sidaway is listed as a small worker who registered his mark in 1777 so not someone who would be expected to make candlesticks. The hallmarks on one stick are clearly overstriking others and it seems very likely that Sidaway had a request for some candlesticks, ordered them in from Sheffield, the centre of filled candlestick manufacturing at this period then overstruck the original Sheffield marks with his maker’s mark and London hallmarks acting as the retailer.
