Essex Military Regimental Mess silver:- a large matched pair of late Victorian silver reproductions of early 18th century octagonal trencher salts, by Aldwinkle & Slater, London, 1890 and 1893 Engraved with the badge of the 3rd Battalion, the Essex Regiment on one side and later engraved to other side with the collar badge of the Essex Regiment, which was the French eagle of the 62nd Infanterie de Ligne captured at Salamanca in 1812, and inscription ‘4th./5th Bn., the Essex Regiment (TA), 25th July, 1964’, 10.9cm. diameter, 4cm. high, 13oz (403 gm). (2) The 3rd. (Militia) Bn. Essex Regt. was formed from the Essex Rifles Militia in 1881. It served in the 2nd Boer War and was disembodied at Warley in October, 1902 on its return from South Africa.
