TWO RARE IVORY RATTLES China or Thailand, 18th/ 19th ct. L. bis 22 cm Ivory with age patina. Each with two cover bars with curved ends and three flat and shorter inner bars. This type of rattles (chin. paiban / yaban) are in use in China since the Tang Dynasty as rhythm instruments. Mostly made of wood, those made of ivory are very rare. Under Chinese influence they also spread to Thailand. Estate of Dr. Otto Schwend (1892 - 1951), collected between 1923 and 1925 in Tungkun, Canton Province and since then continuously in family possession- See a similar clapper in lot no. 14 in auction 437, col.
