By 1842 Town & Emanuel were 'Importers and Manufacturers of 'buhl', marquetries, resner and carved furniture' and the use of bright red tortoiseshell and brass marquetry with ebony and gilt metal mounts is typical of their work.For a similar pair of cabinets with paper labels for Town & Emanuel see Sotheby's, London, 2nd November 2011, L11303, Lot 333 (£12,500). Condition Report There are marks, scratches and abrasions consistent with age and use, some to the edges.Overall the piece is clean including the ebonised wood and the gilt metal mounts. Some of the gilt metal mounts are not quite flush with the cabinet and could possibly be later.The velvet lining is later and the backboards look to have been removed and replaced to fit the lining as some velvet fabric is visible to the back of the cabinet around the edge of the backboards.The locks are replaced, the husk covered escutcheons possibly later (one lacking).The backboards and underside have been later ebonised.Please refer to the additional images for a visual reference of condition.
