A gilt bronze box formed as a phoenix or fenghuang modelled couchant, in the round, fine detailing to the feathered body and wings with layers of plumage with some feathers lightly etched, others framed by deeper grooves, the wings highlighted in high-relief, detailing to the beak and face, legs and feet in high relief, tucked neatly beneath the body; both halves hollow. 518 grams, 10.6cm (4 1/4"). Property of a London doctor; previously in the collection of her husband by inheritance; formerly acquired during travels in the Far East during the 1920s. Condition Report Fine condition.
