c.10th century AD. An iron spearhead, the blade with nearly straight edges, squared shoulders at the base; tapering circular socket. See similar spear from Gotland in Hjardar, K. and Vike, V., Vikings at war, Oxford-Philadelphia, 2016, p.177. 143 grams, 34.7cm (13 3/4"). Property of a London gallery; previously from a private British collection; formerly acquired from a European gentleman; acquired in the 1990s and earlier. The second typological group of Viking spears is dated to the period between 850-1100 AD. Amongst them the type M, to which this spearhead seems to belong, shows a distinctively round socket in section and is often inlaid with precious metal. Condition Report Fair condition, cleaned and conserved.
