c.10th century AD. An iron spearhead with broad triangular blade, narrow neck, circular-section socket with hole for attachment stud. See Hjardar K. and Vike, V., Vikings at war, Oxford-Philadelphia, 2016, p.292, for a similar spear type. 450 grams, 32.7cm (12 3/4"). Property of a London gallery; previously from a private British collection; formerly acquired from a European gentleman; from a collection formed in the 1990s and earlier. The second typological group of Viking spears is dated to the period of 850-1100 AD. Amongst them the type G, to which this spearhead seems to belong, shows a distinctively round socket in section and nearly straight edges on the blade. Condition Report Fair condition, cleaned and conserved.
