Description
Translation provided by Youdao
9th-11th century AD. An iron axehead with broad curved blade, short neck, curved edge with chin and spur to the lower edge, facetted socket, flared square hammer face to the rear. Cf. Petersen, J., De Norske Vikingsverd, Oslo, 1919, pp.38-39. 546 grams, 15.3cm (6"). Ex California, USA, collection formed since the late 1960s; acquired on the European art market before the late 1990s. The axe seems to be a hybrid between the type B and the type C of the Viking axes, according to Petersen's classification. When Petersen's book was published, the type C seemed to be geographically limited to Mid/North Norway, but it was especially known from the East, in Sweden and in Gotland. The type B shares the hanging beard, but the upper edge of the blade is straight, and there are no shaft hole lobes, like in type B. [No Reserve] Condition Report Fine condition.
