12th-14th century AD. A group of two rectangular bronze belt mounts comprising: one rectangular mount with two concave sides, engraved with a mythical beast composed of a canine head, eagle's body and serpentine tail on a hatched rectangular background, detailing to head and wings, two circular piercings for attachment; a plaque with integral semi-circular hook to one edge, a beast with an eagle's body and bestial head in low relief, detailing to the body, wings, feet and face, two circular piercings for attachment. See similar mounts in Egan, G., Pritchard, F., Dress Accessories, 1150-1450, London, 2002, p.31, lett.B. 17.7 grams total, 28-52mm (1 - 2"). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection; previously acquired in Munich, Germany, between 1992 and 1996. British archaeologists found several buckles with enamelled frames and plates in London, as well as some unattached plates decorated in such a way. Sometimes they belong to double loop buckles, and are abundant in the iconography of the fantastic animals.
