Diamonds, despite it being one of the most historically sophisticated gems in relation to humanity, has one of the simplest chemical forms compared to other crystals – it is purely made of carbon. They form within great depths of the earth’s mantle, some as far down as 500 kilometres beneath the surface of the earth. For these gems to crystalize, it requires tremendous amounts of heat and pressure, which can be 50,000 times that of the daily pressure we experience at the surface of the earth. Born from extremely harsh conditions, their origins are also ancient as they are known to be formed billions of years ago.
These crystals then are transferred via volcanic eruptions to the surface of the earth, rapidly transferring molten rocks containing diamonds out into the crust. If these minerals cool down at a slow pace as they rise during the process, it could turn into graphite. If it gets in contact with oxygen as the temperatures are still high, it could potentially even vaporize into carbon dioxide. These types of volcanic eruptions that deliver diamonds to the surface are so rare, that such an event has never been observed in modern times. If diamonds can survive through this rigorous formation process as well as the volcanic eruptions that carry them to the surface for it to be discovered, they can potentially last forever. As one of the most beloved minerals throughout history, diamonds have been a constant subject of study for gemmologists. The first standardized grading systems for diamonds emerged in the 1950s. Diamonds are graded by a standard called 4Cs – which refer to its carat weight, colour, clarity and cut. The 4Cs combined helps define the quality and the value of a diamond. The 80.88 carat emerald cut diamond is an extraordinary gem that excels in every aspect of the 4Cs, and these categories reveal the true rarity of the diamond.
“‘…A valuable stone is the one thing that endures. Lace is soon a rag, velvet impossible, flowers dead; but a jewel, if treated kindly, lives forever. It is indeed almost as indestructible as truth or a mighty love…”
H. Bridgman, 1916
