Rudolf Bauer, Polish 1889-1953- Ohne Titell; watercolour, signed lower right, 20x23cm (ARR) Provenance: Dobiaschofsky Auktionen AG, Bern, 8 November 2001, lot 1552, where purchased by the present owner. Note: Rudolf Bauer was a German artist who was a central figure in the development of abstract art in the 20th century, and whose works formed a significant part of the collection of Solomon R. Guggenheim. Bauer participated in Der Sturm, the avant-garde group which promoted seminal artistic movements as Cubism, Surrealism, and Expressionism in early 20th century Europe. Bauer was therefore a key player in the history of modern art, at the forefront of its development alongside fellow members of the group, such as Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, and Franz Marc. The present piece is a clear example of Bauers style, dominated by the abstract geometric forms which defined the non-denominational approach of which he was a key proponent. Bauers first solo show was held at the Der Sturm gallery in 1917, followed by further solo exhibitions in 1919 and 1920. Solo exhibitions have since been in galleries across Europe, including at the Galerie Gmurzynska in Cologne (1969 and 1971), Annely Juda Gallery in London, Galerie Withofs in Brussels, and Staedtisches Museum in Wiesbaden (all in 1970), and the Museum Moderner Kunst in Vienna (1985).Please refer to department for condition report
