Albert Marquet, French 1875 1947- Sur le Paquebot la Promenade; pen and ink, signed with initials lower right, 12.7x8.5cm Provenance: JPL Fine Arts, London, where purchased by the present owner. Note: Albert Marquet was a French painter who was a central figure in the artistic milieu of 20th-century Paris, and is often associated with the Fauvist movement. Marquet was closely connected with many of the key figures of early 20th-century French art, befriending Henri Matisse whilst a student at the École des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, before studying at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he met the symbolist painter Gustave Moreau. Marquet participated in the Salon dAutomne in 1905, where his paintings were exhibited alongside works by Matisse, Raoul Dufy, Henri Manguin, Louis Valtat and Georges Braque, amongst others, cementing his association with the Fauvist movement from its inception. Works by Marquet are in prominent museum collections around the world, including the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and has been the subject of a retrospective at the Musée dart Moderne de Paris. Please refer to department for condition report
