In 1905, with a group of artists including Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958), Derain exhibited at the Salon d’Automne, Paris, where the critic Louis Vauxcelles used the word 'fauves' (wild beasts), the movement later being called Fauvism. Derain’s oeuvre marries the volumes of Paul Cezanne’s (1839-1906) flatness with known non-Western sculpture, which is evident in this portrait.Please refer to department for condition report
